The Sovereign | Tales of Varouxvia: Ascension S46
Welcome back to Tales of Varouxvia: Ascension, session 46! In this gripping episode, the party known as The TBDs continues their quest in the enigmatic town of Grimwhistle Depot. This peculiar town is seemingly inhabited by only 12 individuals, all of whom are the same eccentric and possibly mad gnome, Old Twimbly. Twimbly serves as the caretaker for the town and the mysterious local lords, the Ravencrests.
The TBDs embark on a series of quests set by the various Twimblys, earning favor and rewards. Their journey leads them to the ominous Mt. Mortis, a mass grave formed from the bodies of those claimed by an ancient undead plague known as The Affliction. The mountain's catacombs are now a macabre reminder of the dangers of necromancy. Armed with their newly acquired immovable rod from blacksmith Twimbly, the party scales the peak and discovers carvings from the legendary heroes known as The Vanguard, previously called the Lich Kickers for their crusade against necromantic magic. Bark and Ennui find their grandparents' names among them, learning there may have been a love connection between Galvin, Ennuis grandpa and one Eldon Barleybraid.
Ennui uncovers signs of The Stranger, the god of secrets and fate, while taking charcoal rubbings of the carvings. Hatchet receives unsettling signs from The Stranger, who uses those around him to communicate. Returning to Grimwhistle, the party follows clues set by The Stranger and the name "The Sovereign," leading them to new adventurers Caston, Nola, Stitch, Gurruush, and Zoler. These green adventurers have connected Grimwhistle to a divine shard thought to be hidden in the catacombs of Mt. Mortis.
The TBDs investigate a tower where the sun's shadow remains fixed, finding it protected by a strange field. Ennui befriends a local fern and learns that Twimbly and a mysterious woman frequently visit the tower. Guard Twimbly, in a frenzied state, threatens the party, revealing that he harbors more secrets than he lets on, his silly gnomish demeanor fading as he is pressed on the matter.
After returning to town and earning a goblin-smashing hammer for obtaining the crystal, the party turns in for the night. However, Azel and Bark are drawn to a scream in the night, leading them to a gruesome scene of blood and ghosts in the forest. Narrowly escaping a deadly encounter with the spirits, the party must now piece together the day’s strange events and prepare for what lies ahead.
