In this tutorial, i will show you how to add posed human models and rigged human models into your UE4 projects. I will also show you how to create a pose for the rigged models and place them inside your projects.
1.Introduction
Hey good morning guys. Today in this tutorial I am going to show you how we can add human models to make our archviz project more realistic and bring life to our project. By putting human models into our project, we can improve the look and feel of our environment and increase the realism of our digital environment.
In this tutorial, we will use human models from Render People. I have included a link above where you can download the human models.
2.Posed People vs Rigged People
Posed people are 3d human models that come with a pose. We cannot change the way they pose, so it acts like a cutout. The great thing about posed people is that we can bring them in as static meshes, so we can use lightmass to bake the lighting on them. We also does not need to spend time on creating their poses, and you can shop around render people for the models you want that are suitable for your projects.
Rigged people on the other hand, already have ‘bones’ attached to them. These bones can help us easily shape our models into the pose we want them to have. We can also add animations to them.
In this tutorial, we will be using both the posed people and rigged people. We will bring in a posed figure and place it in our room, and then import in our rigged model, create a still pose and place it in our environment as well.
3.Importing posed people and assigning textures.
After downloading the posed people model, we will proceed to import the files. After unzipping the file, you will be given these files. Also check to make sure that the textures folder is there where the textures are stored. For this project, we want to import in the 100k FBX file, so lets proceed to import it in now. We will also import the diffuse and normal textures for this. When we import, make sure the generate UV is checked. This will help us create the lightmaps for use later.
Once we have imported all the models and textures, let’s make sure the material is created properly and assign the textures.
4.Placing our first posed figure
Once the models and textures are created properly. We can simply drag out our posed people into the scene. So this is a very simple step. I just want to highlight that for human models, since they are organic looking, I would set the lightmap resolution to something higher than the 256. This will give the model more ‘real estate’ area in terms of light maps. Once we have placed the models, we can proceed to bake the lightmaps.
5.Importing Rigged People and assigning textures.
For rigged people, after we downloaded and unzip the folder, we can copy the entire folder into our project’s content folder. Once we have done that the assets will appear in our project.
Depending on where you save your project file, the textures may be out of place, so we will have to go in and reassign the textures. For this rigged people model, it comes with 5 textures, and they are named according to their textures in the material, so let’s assign the appropriate textures to the correct nodes. Diffuse to diffuse, masked to masked etc. Once that is done, our human models will look good again.
6.Posing our rigged model.
As you can see the model comes with we a call a T pose. This is usually the case for rigged model. For this project, I would like Eric, to stand in a corner with his arms folded. So in unreal engine, we can create human poses using rigged people by using their animation tool. Lets navigate to the rigged model. Under the sekeleton tab, we can see that the bones are already assigned, and we can move the body parts to the pose that we want him to have. So right now all we have to do is to move the joints and the bones to get his arms folded.
7.Placing our rigged model.
Finally we will place the Rigged character into the scene. What we will do is to drag him out into the scene. As you can see he is still in his T shaped pose. So we need to assign him the animation asset. Once we dragged him out and assigned the animation asset, we will then inherit the new pose.
8.Closing
In this way you can create many many new poses for your people models using rigged human. I hope this course have been beneficial to you. Remember to subscribe to the channel if you love what we are doing here, and comment below if you have any questions and just want to give us a thumbs up. I have put a link below the description to render people, so if you would like to look for more models to put into your digital environment, you can find lots of models there.
