00:09 - Workflow of our project:
3d modelling to model the house. Exterior walls, windows, doors, stairs.
Export into unreal engine for lightmap test. We do this test first as the most important shadows are on the house itself - walls, floors, ceilings etc. Without interior furnishings, the light building is fast and we can catch any lightmap issues asap.
Further modelling for interior furnishing. This is where we bring in additional furnitures.
Materials and lighting. We will 'enhance' and touch up the materials in unreal engine if needed and start looking at post processing. We will not cover blueprints and interactivity in this tutorial, but this is the time to add interaction if we want to.
Postprocessing - Lut, contrast, bloom etc.
Final Light baking and presentation.
Software Discussions:
02:57 - Autocad:
Get a exact 1:1 layout file from pictures. Its easier to trace the layout in autocad, and then use snapping tool in 3ds max to model the house, rather than directly modelling in 3ds max.
Use to created detailed drawings with dimensions for fabrication.
We will only create a layout plan in this tutorial, which will be imported into 3ds max for our modelling use
04:02 - 3ds Max:
We will model our house in 3ds max. Traditionally, renders are done here using vray, but for the purpose of the tutorial, we will not be doing any renders in 3ds max.
We will not be creating materials here. But for those 3d models that we download from 3dsky, some models will have materials. These materials will be brought into unreal engine if we use unreal studio/datasmith.
We also introduce 2 scripts that we use often that will help tremendously in our modelling.
Units and Snapping setup is also important, and we will go through in more detail when we do modelling.
06:38 - Unreal Engine:
This is where most of the fun happens. We do material creation and lighting here.
An archviz scene can only be made 'realtime' with interactivity and able to run through with a VR headset in unreal engine.
08:01 - Other Softwares:
Sketchup - Another modelling software. Much easier to use than 3ds max but we find it doesn't achieve what we want with lightmaps
Vray - This is the global illumination solution for 3ds max for rendering. There is a vray for unreal engine but will not be covered in this tutorial.
Crazy bump - A cool software that can produce important material maps (Normal, Roughness, Height) maps from a bitmap file.
Bitmap to Materials - Similar to crazy bump, but has much more features.
Substance Designer - Procedurally create new materials. With Substance you can have more control in the materials for your scene.
Speedtree - Create good looking trees procedurally without the need to model from scratch.
