00:09 - What makes a scene photo realistic:
We are going to break down on what makes an archviz scene photo realistic
In general it can be broken into 3 parts. Detailed models, good materials and good lighting.

00:40 - Detailed Modelling:
In real life, there are very few things that look perfect.
There is a degree of 'imperfection' on the way things are in nature. Organic things must look organic
The first way to reflect this is in modelling.
Choose detailed models. Look for good source of 3d models.
Using techniques like chamfering to smoothen edges.

02:34 - Great Materials.
Understanding of the materials engine in your rendering software.
Repetitiveness gives away the organic feel.
Again imperfect looking materials always give the impression of it looking real.

04:31 - Good lighting
The third way to make a scene look good is in the lighting.
Soft ambient occlusion and shadows are critical.
To make things simply - the process of calculating bounced shadows and generating indirect illumination is called
global illumination

06:05 - Static vs Dynamic Lighting
In a 3d render of a 2d picture like vray, its easier to get global illumination as the 'camera' is not moving.
In a realtime scenario, there are two ways to achieve this. Static or dynamic lighting.
Static - precompute all the direct and indirect lighting and 'superimpose' the shadows unto the material. Unreal's
lighting solution for this is called lightmass.
Dynamic - calculate direct and indirect lighting realtime. This is very resource intensive on the hardware. (Unreal has different methods for this RTX ray tracing, DFAO, DFGI, LPV etc).
This tutorial will focus on using static lighting as its suitable for VR and less powerful hardware can be used.

08:55 - Lightmaps
Considerably the most painful part of static lighting in unreal engine.
Lightmaps are data that unreal engine makes use of to store lighting data. For now its just an introduction to the term, but later on, we will discuss a bit more on this.
