Ecton Hill in Staffordshire sits in the heart of the stunning Manifold Valley.
Surrounded by miles and miles of lead mines, Ecton stands alone as an enormous hill, filled with copper. Well, it did until it was hollowed.
Mined since the bronze ages, Ecton jumped onto another level in the mid 1750s when the Duke of Devonshire invested in enormous amounts of infrastructure... inside the hill.
By the early 1800s it was the deepest mine in the country with over 400 men, women and children, working underground.
The Duke made the equivalent in today's money, of 8 million pounds out of the hill, and used part of that to build the Royal Crescent in Buxton, Derbyshire.
But by 1891, it was exhausted.
In 1904, the Leek and Manifold railway was opened to serve these copper mines, and snaked its way through the stunning valley.
I know what you're thinking. Those dates don't add up. And that's because the railway was meant to help facilitate the reopening of Ecton mines, but it never happened. So instead the railway was kept alive by a dairy that was built within some of the old mine buildings.
Myself and Phil are here in the Peak District to find what remains of the many copper mines that emptied this enormous hill. And boy, are there some remains!
We'll also have a lot at the railway, and the remains of the former dairy, including a 150 metre tunnel beneath the hill, that was used to store whey powder.
Now it's just picturesque countryside, and you'd have no idea just how important this place was. Until you start to look...
