The Walk - EP 133 - Plague Pits & Viaducts - The Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway - Winchester
Hello all. In this episode, I am daaan saaaf.
I am in Winchester, Hampshire, the original capital of England, from 928 up until the 12th century.
I'm walking a small section of railway from Hockley viaduct, to Winchester Chesil (Cheesehill) station.
The part of the line I am walking was actually built by the London & South Western Railway, but was meant to be constructed by the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway.
The DN&SR was meant to connect Oxfordshire, and the midlands, with the busy port of Southampton. But there was a problem. By the time they reached Winchester Chesil (Originally Cheesehill) in 1885, their pockets were empty, so so construction further south was halted.
Winchester Chesil was the terminus of the railway for six years until the London & South Western Railway stepped in and built the viaduct across the river Itchen, and the surrounding marshland, before joining their own line at Shawford Junction, and connecting to Southampton that way.
There are loads of remains to be found including viaducts, bridges, goods sheds and Chesil tunnel.
I also take a walk around St Catherines Hill, an Iron Age hill fort, that was the site of mass plague burials during the Black Death of 1348.
