Full 5pm half-hour and 6pm hour-long newscasts from Kansas City's Scripps-owned NBC affiliate, on the last day for chief meteorologist Gary Lezak. Recorded Thursday, December 1, 2022.
Lezak had been the chief meteorologist at KSHB since 1999, and in the market since 1992. He's retiring at the age of 60 to focus full-time on his business, Weather20/20. The station hired Mike Nicco from KGO-TV to replace him as chief meteorologist. Nicco has ties to the market and it seems like the two like each other. The station did a very good job sending Gary off, although I almost get the feeling that Lezak wanted a send off this elaborate (sometimes you can tell if the talent wants it, if the talent doesn't but the station gives them a big send off anyway, or if the talent doesn't want a big send off and the station respects that).
I thought the handing off of the weather clicker to Mike by Gary was pretty cool, but lame that it was pre-taped instead of live. The rest of the current weather team (Wes Peery, Jeff Penner, and Lindsey Anderson — all of whom were passed over for the chief position in favor of an outside hire) also gave their tributes and well wishes to Gary, but no one else, which is interesting given his long history in the market, unless it was spread out and I missed it.
Those are the only positive things I can say about the station because otherwise this newscast is not very good, it just felt dull and like it dragged on forever, and covered a lot of irrelevant stuff from outside the market. They also can't decide if they want to be serious or laid back. The viewers seem to agree with me because they're pretty much last place consistently now, with the momentum they had in the early-to-mid 2010s being a thing of the past. They also seem to obsess over the Chiefs more than all of the other stations in the market. I get that the Chiefs are big in KC, but this station can't go a hour without talking about them it seems.
Thank you to Trent for the tip!
