It would mean a lot to the lab! Now let's get started. Number five! The star-nosed mole. This little guy looks like it came straight out of a science fiction novel. Believe it or not, even though they are almost all the way blind, scientists have discovered that they are one of the most lethal hunters among all the animals in the whole world. They have amazing super senses that allow them to track down their prey, and they are one of the best diggers in the animal world. It is also known as one of the fastest eaters on the planet. It consumes its food at an incredible rate. And unbelievably, it can even smell its prey underwater. Stranger than strange, this little creature definitely seems to be living up to its science-fiction look so far. Number four! The giant squid. There have long been tales of a giant squid or Kraken that could swallow men and ships whole and leave absolute destruction in their wake. While these tales seem far-fetched, they may not be as unreal as people have thought. Scientists have actually found several giant squid species that exist. This giant squid comes in at an average of 46 feet long, eleven hundred pounds in weight, its tentacles can stretch up to 33 feet long and its eyeballs can be as big as a basketball. Pretty unreal to say the least. This squid is definitely big enough to cause some damage, so you better hope that the next time you are on a fishing trip you don't stumble across this mythical creature. Number three. The superb bird of paradise. If you were to walk across this bird in the wild, you might feel like you were imagining things. It is the male of the superb paradise species that has this special and crazy look. It appears it has glowing neon blue eyes, and when it is seeking a companion it will fan out its feathers making a shield of sorts that also has neon blue feathers that will resemble a face. This is used as a way to not only find a mate but doubles as its defense mechanism against predators. Either way, when you look at this bird it sure does seem to be pretty unreal, to say the least. Number two! The red uakari. Looking like an ancient tribal leader with a red-painted face, this mythical monkey is actually real. It is the only American monkey with a short tail but yet it still manages to move from tree to tree with ease. The brighter red their face is, the more healthy the monkey is said to be. A whiter more pale face in this species indicates that the monkey has fallen into poor health. They also like to gather into groups by the hundreds for actual social gatherings just like humans do. Can you imagine running across a group of these mythical creatures while you are on your next hike?
So, some things are just too weird to be true, and coming in at number one on our list is an animal that seems like it belongs in a fairy tale. Number one! The vampire deer. Even though it looks like it may try to suck your blood and turn you into a vampire, this mythical monster is actually quite the contrary. It is a rare subspecies of the male water deer or musk deer. Just like most male deer grow horns or antlers on top of their head, this male musk deer grows them out of the top of its jaw instead. Resembling what many confuse to be fangs. They use these fangs to compete with one another just like other species of deer will do. However, these vampire deer are actually nearly extinct. Which could mean that they very well may become one of the many mythical creatures of the past after all.
