Some individuals have a clear fat loss goal and go into a cutting phase, whereas others are focused on building muscle and have a bulking phase. But there are also people in the middle, that want to lose excess fat, especially in stubborn areas, while building more muscle.

In this video, I will give an update on my previous video about a skinny-fat solution. You will learn all about how you can efficiently work towards losing fat and building muscle and I'll explain how to decide your next steps based on your current situation.

First, about the “skinny fat look”, this simply refers to a physique that is within a healthy bodyweight but with a higher proportion of fat and low muscle mass. To get rid of the skinny fat look, it essentially comes down to dropping fat and building muscle. If you are a beginner trainee, it is possible to gain muscle while losing fat. You may not gain muscle as quickly as on a bulk, but research clearly shows you can still make decent progress.

That’s why I’d suggest for most beginner trainees to not go all-in with bulk, but to structure their nutrition in a way to promote body recomposition. This means maintaining a moderate calorie deficit of ~15%. This helps you lose fat while still having enough calories to train hard.

But there are also instances in which it makes sense to start bulking. For instance, for individuals that are relatively lean already and/or have more than 1.5 years of training experience, I would typically suggest starting a bulk. See the timestamps for this video below.
