Full first block of the 5am newscast on Nexstar's independent station in San Diego, California. Recorded Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
In August of last year, a year ago, Nexstar bought KUSI from its longtime owner McKinnon Broadcasting. Nexstar already owns KSWB, so this created a duopoly. KUSI's news programming is generally higher-rated than KSWB, so Nexstar has sought to keep KUSI's identity and focus on newsmaker interviews (which appeals more to older audiences) separate from KSWB (which has long tried to court a younger audience). From what I understand, the station's staffs have remained largely intact aside from management, with KSWB management now running both operations.
A few months after the takeover, KUSI relocated to KSWB's studios while Nexstar completely rebuilds KUSI's facilities to eventually serve as the permanent base for the two stations. KUSI is now airing from a small temporary studio at KSWB with their own dedicated control room (to allow both KUSI and KSWB to still broadcast their own programs at the same time). KUSI also shut down their own website and now posts their stories to KSWB's website (which remains fox5sandiego.com). The news output remains the same though and KSWB and KUSI still "compete" against each other in many timeslots (no shows were dropped to reduce competition).
The graphics are mostly the same as before, which was an in-house job by KUSI's creative team. The only major modification was the lower thirds to accomodate new production equipment at their temporary studio, and a bug and ticker built using KSWB's template. I imagine they're waiting until moving back to their former location before they do a serious overhaul of the look.
The music is still the same, "The One and Only" from Gari Music, versions of which have been used since 1997.
The station seems to be moving away from its long-standing "More Local News" slogan in favor of "Where The Focus Is You" and "Putting You First", neither of which were used under McKinnon (yet "More Local News" is visually seen in the ID at the start, so I'm not sure).
Finally, Charlie Van Dyke was dropped as voiceover in favor of Kelly Pidgeon.
Anchored by Lauren Phinney with weather from Diane Tuazon. Includes reports from Salvador Rivera (Nexstar Border Report) and Jamie Chambers.
