Danny Glover explains his approach to playing Mister in 'The Color Purple'
Danny Glover was asked during this 2008 "Be Kind, Rewind" interview if he prefers to develop a character strictly through imagination, or tap into reality through research. He uses a bit of both, he said, and cited as an example his approach to playing Mister in "The Color Purple."
The character, aka Albert Johnson, was physically and emotionally abusive to his wife Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), who never asked for his "sorry-ass hand in marriage." The role will be played by Colman Domingo in the film adaptation of The Color Purple Broadway musical, due in theaters December 20, 2023.
