You will be using an oven in this lesson, so make sure you have an adult to help if you are too young to use an oven on your own. Also, the melted crayon is really hot, so be careful when taking them out of the oven. Let them cool completely before removing them from the mold.

If you have a bunch of broken crayons or just want to create your own custom crayons this tutorial is for you.

Supplies
Broken Crayon Pieces without Wrapper
Oven Proof Silicone Baking Molds
Toothpick
Hot Pad or Pot Holder
Oven Mitts

Steps
1. Preheat Oven to 275
2. Gather broken crayons or break some, make sure there are no wrappers
3. Choose color groups
4. Place the color groups in the silicone baking molds
5. Put the mold in the oven for 10-13 mins (Melissa and Doug crayons take longer)
6. Once it is melted, carefully take it out
7. Use a toothpick to swirl the colors
8. Let it cool

Adaptions
Younger children can place the crayons in the silicone molds but I would not let them swirl it with a toothpick as the wax could burn them if they accidentally get it on them.

Extensions
Use your crayons to make rubbings
Wrap your crayons and give them to a friend
Create a new name for the color of your crayon
Learn about how crayons are made

Books
Harold and the Purple Crayon - Crockett Johnson

Homework
Give your crayon as a gift to someone else

Tips
Melting crayons in the microwave is not recommended. This could short out your microwave.
The oven method seems the safest.
