This is one of my favourite presentations from over 16 years ago by Dr. Loren Chiu. Dr. Chiu is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Alberta.
Back in 2008, Loren provided a spectacular presentation on the Specificity of Training at a conference I was holding for local NSCA members. He outlines his definition of specificity and argues that true specificity is difficult to achieve, and may not even exist. Dr. Chiu contends that we should rather focus on the efficacy of transfer of training using different methods. As such, he recommends that we keep training simple and focus on basic concepts such as strength and power development, muscle recruitment efficiency and quality of movement. These are concepts that still apply today, despite the background noise created by social media.
