Competition is probably the biggest. Upwork is a double-edged sword. Tons of opportunities, but also tons of competition for those opportunities.

Bidding pressure. A corollary of that competition is the pressure to underbid in order to win. It drives the prices of everything down.

Fees. While it's part of doing business, you still pay fees you wouldn't off of Upwork.

Dependence. You can become too reliant on the platform to get clients. This can limit your ability to build a sustainable client base outside of the platform.

Dispute resolution. Upwork has a process and you don't have much say in it. This can sometimes work against you.

Ultimately, though, as long as you don't use it as your sole source of clients and you're always working to build your business outside of Upwork, it can be a great additional source of clients. So, the tradeoff is worth it, in my opinion.
