Want to master Upwork? Learn everything you need to know to start getting clients on Upwork inside my book, Upwork Essentials here: https://johnmorrisonline.com/essentials
Let's start with the basic... these ARE obvious, but also critical, so don't overlook them:
Create a strong profile
Write good proposals
Build a strong portfolio
Do good work, and...
Get positive reviews
Nothing overly revolutionary there, but that's the foundation. But, here's a couple that aren't quite as obvious:
Be active. Upwork actually pays attention to your activity on the site... not just job history. Logins, searches, submitting proposals, etc... and they factor that into how they rank your profile AND your proposals. So, stay active on the site.
Engage with the Upwork community. Participate in community forums. It's not just freelancers that hang out in there. Clients, too. They can see your posts there and want to hire you. But also, you can create relationships with other freelancers for sub-contracting work, and so on.
Promote yourself outside of Upwork. Use your personal website, blog, social media platforms, and professional networks to showcase your skills and attract potential clients and bring then to Upwork. Job history is gold on Upwork. Create your own and then land jobs you wouldn't have otherwise.
As always, don't sit around hoping and wishing things work out. MAKE them work out.
