Giants are a thing of myth that aren't supposed to be real right? Well, maybe not so fast. There once existed a man who was nicknamed the Alton Giant for how tall he was and his sheer size. According to the Guinness Book of World Records Robert Wadlow measured in at an astonishing 8 foot 11 inches tall and weighed 439 pounds at the time of his death in 1940 at only 22 years old.
Tragically while traveling in 1940 Robert fell seriously ill from an infected blister on his foot that had formed due to a fitted iron brace that he had to wear to support his frame. The brace rubbed his skin and caused a raw spot that Robert was unaware of due to a lack of sensation in his arms and legs that was caused by his size. When it became infected Robert refused to go to the hospital and even though he received medical treatment in his hotel room the infection became septic and worsened rapidly. He developed an extremely high fever and after falling asleep on the night of July 14th, 1940 Robert Wadlow would never wake up again.
Robert may have been a real-life giant but he was a Gentle Giant, to say the least. He is remembered as being soft-spoken, kind, caring, and always having a big heart! To this day Robert Wadlow holds the world record as the tallest man to ever live!
