By default, X and Y Position properties are grouped together in After Effects. They can be made independent by right mouse clicking and choosing "Separate Dimensions". This allows the dimensions to be more easily controlled independently via keyframes or expressions.
The X and Y Position properties can be made independent by default by activating the "Default Position Properties to Separated Dimensions" option...
