If a tool within the Illustrator Toolbar (Tools panel) has other tools tucked behind it, a small triangle is shown in the lower right corner of the icon. Clicking and holding will reveal all of those tools in a mini toolbar. On the right edge of this mini toolbar is a region which, when released over, will detach a copy of that mini toolbar. No change is made to the main toolbar and the mini toolbar can be repositioned and closed at any point.
