Using a High density foam for your campervan mattress is important for more than just getting a goof nights sleep, although that is the most important!
First of all - If you are planning on using your mattress as a couch during the day then you NEED to use a high-density foam. Because your body weight isn't as evenly distributed when you're sitting up, you will completely bottom out a soft foam when sitting on it. You don't want that-trust me!
High density foam allows the mattress to be thinner than a soft or medium density foam because it does a far better job preventing your body weight from bottoming out on your bed frame, even if the material is thinner. Having a thinner mattress is a huge win when every millimeter counts!
High density foam also lasts much longer than softer foam, which becomes even softer after a short period traveling, and will become painfully uncomfortable.
The good news is that even if you're used to sleeping on a softer mattress at home, you can still get a high density mattress that you find comfortable. The deluxe mattress at clark rubber for example is a firm mattress that has a 1 inch layer of memory foam on top so it has the benefits of a firm mattress while still feeling soft to sleep on.
