Full 5.30pm newscast from the Sinclair-owned CBS affiliate in El Paso, Texas, recorded on Friday, August 2, 2024. This is the last ever 5.30pm newscast for the station.

Last month, it was announced in a local online newspaper that Sinclair would be making cuts at the El Paso duopoly. This primarily affected KDBC, and not the Fox affiliate, KFOX. The move basically eliminated duplicate newscasts that were produced in the same timeslots, so for KDBC, they lost their morning news and 5.30pm news since KFOX also has newscasts in those time slots. KDBC kept their 12pm (despite this being reported as being cut, it was not) and 10pm newscasts as KFOX does not have newscasts at those times.

The morning newscast was replaced with The National Desk at 5am, and the 6am hour of KFOX 14 Morning News at 6. The 5.30pm newscast was replaced with a simulcast of the 5.30pm half-hour of KFOX's 5pm newscast.

KDBC and KFOX had separate anchors, sets, and control rooms, but shared reporters (their setup was heavily modeled on what Sinclair does in San Antonio with WOAI/KABB). Some staffers were cut in-front and behind the camera. Some of these are transfers to other Sinclair stations, such as their morning anchor, others are straight layoffs (their investigative reporter was one), and in the case of John Purvis (who started with KFOX before switching to KDBC), it's a retirement.

As mentioned, this was John Purvis' last day, but his final show was the 10pm. I did not capture that due to a scheduling conflict, but he did have a nice sendoff and special report as mentioned. Since the noon and 10pm shows are continuing, I did not make it a priority to capture those.

I feel conflicted here compared to the cutbacks in other Sinclair markets. It always sucks to see people lose their jobs, especially in this economy. That being said, the real closure of KDBC's newsroom happened in 2010 when their original news department was disbanded, and news was outsourced to KTSM. Sinclair bought KFOX in 2012 and KDBC a year later, so that partnership essentially was switched from KTSM to KFOX. The only thing being that Sinclair added morning, noon, and weekend news KDBC wasn't doing under KTSM. This essentially reverses most of the 2014 investments Sinclair made.

TLDR: El Paso isn't losing its fourth news voice, it already lost it 14 years ago, and the amount of news coverage being received will still be about the same, but it does suck jobs are still being lost.
