I call it the resistance. Sometimes the weight of inertia feels too heavy to overcome. You want to go take pictures. Or rather, you want to want to go take pictures. You browse the places you’ve been to a million times in your mind. But for some reason though, none of your typical spots excite you anymore. Nothing is powerful enough to push you out the door. Your car feels a million miles away and the gas tank is almost on empty and you forgot to charge your camera last night and you were tossing and turning in bed so much that you didn’t get enough sleep and every voice in your head is telling you to just stay in bed one hour longer. The resistance.

It’s these moments that we need to dig deep. Push through. For some of us, it’s one of the hardest things we’ll ever do. But I promise it gets easier over time. With practice you can train your mind to relish in the discomfort.

It’s more than just a creative block. You know that, I know that, it’s okay. We’ve ALL been there. Today, it feels all too familiar. But I had an idea that helped.

I realized I needed more than just an interesting or beautiful location to help me push through the inertia. I realized I wasn’t emotionally invested enough with the subjects I was photographing before. I wanted my photos to evoke something more profound than just superficial aesthetic beauty.

So I started taking my camera to places that I WAS emotionally invested in. Places that brought back my own memories. Memories of joy and bliss, memories of pain or grief. I suddenly had a new challenge. How to capture the essence of those memories in a photo. How to look back in time through the lens of my camera. How does one photograph a sense of longing? A sense of loss? A sense of love?

I was so surprised by how this one simple change elevated my art. I was using the tools I had to revisit my past and conquer my trauma, take control of my inner monologue, and seek out connection with others through shared experience. I think if you try this yourself, you’ll find some of your most profound photographs emerge from your most difficult emotional journeys. If you purposefully put yourself out of your comfort zone I think you’ll be surprised at just how much you can grow.

I know it’s still not easy. But I hope this idea was enough to maybe get you inspired again. To bring back that passion that you feel like you’ve lost. To help get you out the door and feeling more fulfillment from your photography again.
