The lens focal length you choose not only effects the field of view, but also the spatial compression of your photo, making your subjects feel either more or less detached from the background. A 35mm lens feels more intimate in a medium shot, whereas a 50mm lens separates the subject a bit more and feels "further away" in a medium shot. Depending on your style, you might lean one way or the other. Or perhaps you land right in the middle?
