Space - Position - Contrast
The atmosphere is “the tone or mood of a place”
The natural first step is to create a place. To do that we use reverb.
I would think about the type of space you are trying to create, I am a sucker for HUGE spaces so I usually opt for a long and large reverb of some kind.
The next step is to think about where your sound is coming from within your chosen space, for this use can use direction mixers or panning combined with the wet/dry mix of your reverb.
This can be subtle, slightly left of centre with an 80/40 dry/wet mix.
Next, add another element to contrast with your first sound and give your atmosphere LIFE. This will act like a photograph; your first sound will be the blurry background and the second sound will be the thing that is in focus in the foreground.
For example, I could use a high piano note, panned slightly to the left that I then put into a cathedral reverb with a 50/50 dry/wet mix. I would then bring in a violin playing pizzicato but with little/no reverb, making the piano note and its reverb seem even bigger.
By following these steps you will give your track an immediate sense of atmosphere.
