BORING string parts?

They sound like a 90s keyboard loop.

Have no fear, I can help - I have taken tons of “boring” string parts and made them sound “Hollywood-ready”!

Here’s how you can do the same ⤵️

The way to give your string parts more interest is by following these steps:

Complement - Vary - Fill - Humanise

1️⃣ Complement

Make sure that each of your string parts is not just copying each other but is playing parts that complement each other. You can do this by getting them to play different notes of the same chord, turning the pattern upside-down, or changing the rhythm for example.

2️⃣ Vary

Be sure to include slight variations on every 2nd and 4th repeat of a region/loop. This will mean that it will feel different when we hear it even though it is essentially the same.

3️⃣ Fill

Add interesting fills/runs at the end of acts/phrases as a way to clearly let the listener know you have reached an endpoint. Plus, they often end up being the ear candy of the track.

4️⃣ Humanise

If you cannot afford live players, get your hands on a stringed instrument and add live parts to your piece. Even just the odd scrape here or there will give your piece its own character. Worst case, humanise the MIDI and record another instrument live on top even if it is a shaker.

These four steps will always stop your #stringmusic from sounding #boring and will probably mean that it stands out from the crowd!
