Second, ask yourself these questions, and be honest:
1️⃣ Do I LIKE working with them? (Very important because if you start to do well with them then they will want to work with you more, and if you don’t like it then it is only going to get worse)
2️⃣ Have I done much work with them? (If you have only done one or two tracks, see if you can get more work from them)
3️⃣ After 12-18 months, have I seen much/any income? (This is down to your own needs but be realistic about how much money you need and how much time this work is taking you)
4️⃣ Have I been working with them long? (Most of the time you won’t see much money for 12-18 months)
5️⃣ Compared to other libraries I work with, how do they compare? (If you only have one to work with then seek out another)
In the early stages of working with libraries, there will be a lot of work with little return.
That’s normal.
One of the biggest worries is that they will prioritise their “best” composers over you. This may be true for briefs/customs and the amount of work they give out but when it comes to placements the only control they have is whether they pitch your music OR if it tagged well (for search purposes).
These things you cannot control and honestly, even if they don’t get you work in a few years library tracks can surprise you out of the blue with a big placement.
This is why I started with the questions. They are working *relationships* where there needs to be a balance of income, opportunity and enjoyment.
Working with a library that mistreats you is not a good idea even if they do get you loads of work. Your mental health will suffer which will ultimately mean you lose your passion/enjoyment/creativity.
On the flip side, working with a library that you love but earns you no money will also bring you stress of another kind.
I like to make sure I have 2-5 working relationships going, this helps to mitigate the stress/imbalance.
