What price are you willing to pay for your freedom?

In Nicaragua, the oppressive Ortega regime is systematically dismantling basic human rights, brutally cracking down on dissent. The government has persecuted the Catholic Church by arresting priests and seminarians, calling them "coup leaders" "assassins," "terrorists," and "sons of the devil."

One target for the Ortega regime has been Bishop Rolando Álvarez, who is living through his second round of nightmarish tyranny under Ortega-a leader who was voted out of office in 1990 only to regain power in 2007.

The regime has declared Bishop Álvarez a "traitor," stripped him of his citizenship, sentenced him to 26 years and four months in prison, and fined him nearly $5,000. Through it all, Bishop Álvarez has remained firm in his witness to the Christian message.

On January 14th, 2024, the Nicaraguan government announced it was expelling the bishop from the country and sending him to the Vatican. At the current time, he is unable to return to Nicaragua and exercise his basic human right to religious freedom.

Courage is contagious-it inspires and emboldens others to speak the truth, even at great cost to themselves. And Bishop Alvarez's courage poses a clear threat to the Ortega regime.

His bold stand provokes an important question: What is freedom worth to us?
