Placenta accreta is when the placenta adheres to the implantation site without a decidua, which can result in massive hemorrhage when the placenta is removed after delivery.
Dx: ultrasound (+/- MRI to confirm)
Tx: Sometimes Cesarean hysterectomy
Risk factors:
prior uterine surgery
risk of accreta is 10% to 25% with one prior cesarean section
exceeds 50% with two or more prior cesareans in patients with placenta previa
placenta previa
advanced maternal age
smoking
multiparity
