US Air Force plane disappeared over the lake // Kinross incident
Lt. Class I Felix Eugene Moncla Jr. (born October 21, 1926 - presumed dead November 23, 1953) is a United States Air Force pilot who disappeared while performing an aerial threat prevention over Lake Superior in 1953. This incident is also known as the Kinross Incident, after the Kinross Air Force Base, where Monkla was on a mission at the time of his disappearance.
The United States Air Force reported that Moncla had crashed and was intercepted by a Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft. According to the report, the pilot of the Canadian aircraft later contacted and stated that he had not seen the interceptor aircraft and that Monkla was never intercepted.
On the evening of November 23, 1953, the Air Defense Command's Ground Intercept Radar in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, detected an unidentified target near the Soo airlocks. The Soo Locks is a Michigan-based parallel lock system located on the Saint Marie River, between Lakes Superior and Huron, and between the Upper Peninsula of the United States and the Canadian province of Ontario. They are designed to regulate the movement of ships in the area between Lake Superior and the Great Lakes. To find out information about the object from the Kinross base, an F-89C Scorpion jet took off under the control of Lieutenant First Class Monkla and Lieutenant Second Class Robert Wilson, who was the radar operator on Scorpio.
However, for several reasons, the Canadian Air Force denied any connection between their plane and the events that took place on that day, which they reported to the public after questions about the incident.
