Hello everyone.
I was so eager to see the difference in performance between 4070 and 4070 Ti, that I decided to emulate RTX 4070 and compare it to the real 4070 Ti.
The role of so-called "emulated 4070" was performed by 4070 Ti, which is Palit GameRock Classic (non-OC) version.
According to Digital Foundry, there is a simple formula to count TFLOPS.
TFLOPS = (Boost clock core frequency in MHz X CUDA cores count X 2)/1000000
According to the rumored 4070 specs (you can find them on Techpowerup website), RTX 4070 will have 2475 MHz boost clock and 5888 shading units (CUDA cores), while RTX 4070 Ti has 2610 MHz boost clock and 7680 shading units.
RTX 4070 Ti: (2610 X 7680 X 2)/1000000 = 40,09 TFLOPS
RTX 4070: (2475 X 5888 X 2)/1000000 = 29,15 TFLOPS
For the emulated "RTX 4070" I had two variants:
(1895 X 7680 X 2)/1000000 = 29,11 TFLOPS
(1910 X 7680 X 2)/1000000 = 29,34 TFLOPS
So I decided to pick the first one, which is the closest performance tier to the rumored specs of 4070.
All I had to do is to lower base core frequency of 4070 Ti down to 1895 MHz. But in games it's peak core frequency usually reaches 2790 Mhz. Which is 7% higher than it's declared "boost clock". So I decided to "increase" the core frequency for the emulated 4070 by 7% as well.
That is why the real core frequency of "4070" in my tests is ~2025 MHz (1895MHz + 7%).
VRAM configuration of both cards will be the same: 192 bit bus and 12 GB of GDDR6X 21000 MHz. So I did not change any memory settings.
Max frequency of 4070 Ti = 2610 + 7% = 2790 MHz
Max frequency of 4070 = 2475 + 7% = 2025 MHz
Take a note that these are not 100% true results, as different GPUs can provide slightly different results (due to factory overclock, difference in temperatures, size of heatsink etc.).
I am using Palit GameRock Classic (non-OC) version. So my "4070" results reflect an approximate level of performance of future non-OC 4070 cards.
