Extreme values of multivariate functions
A local maximum (or minimum) value of a function is the maximum (or minimum) value of the function in the neighbor of a point. Local minimum and maximum values are collectively called extreme values. We can use the first and second derivatives to identify the extreme values of a function if any. The idea is similar to the case for univariate functions, but it is more complicated because it involves multiple derivatives.
