Widgets give WordPress a ton of flexibility. Outside of the post and page content, they're the only way to add totally custom content to your site. Widgets have to be added to widget areas, and the widget areas you have available depend on the theme you choose. WordPress comes with 17 default widgets but you can choose from thousands more by adding free plugins to your site.
