In early February of 1918, from Tobolsk, Anastasia wrote a letter to her friend Katya, Ekaterina Zborovskaya, - the sister of one of the wounded officers from her infirmary. In the envelope with the letter, Anastasia enclosed a photograph taken by Maria, from the roof of the greenhouse they often used to sit on. In the letter, Anastasia described the scenery they could see from the greenhouse - the landscape which had become their entire world for the last six months. In this video, I read this complete letter, along with photographs which illustrate her descriptions, as well as the very photo she sent to her friend, in which you can clearly see what she is describing.

This letter, in full, is included in the book "Anastasia Romanov: Youngest Daughter of the Tsar Speaks Through Her Writings".

"Tobolsk 1918, 7/20 February
Hello Katya my dear. Please pass on this postcard to A.A. I am so sorry I wrote such a silly letter last time, but I had to send it off quickly, and well it ended up just nonsense! How are you doing? It happens that it was this time last year we saw each other. We remember you so very often, our dear ones! The weather these last days is wonderful and so sunny, which already warms us a little bit, so nice. We can’t complain about the weather, it is sunny nearly every day. We continue to slide down the ice-hill. Lately we have been sitting during the day on the roof of our little so-called greenhouse as it is not windy there and it is very warm. Lessons continue as always. I developed our photos today, they turned out not bad. Are you taking any photos lately, or not? It feels like there’s nothing in particular to do here. You probably know that practically all the staff have been fired and people are leaving us, of course. Young people come to us, but no one knows if other new people will arrive! We are not allowed to go to church any more so we have vsenoshnaya and obednya at home. It’s not the same, of course. I am writing this letter to you sitting on a trunk in the corridor where it is warm and cozy. Everyone goes by. M[aria] has just come, her eye is better, but still black with a small bump still remaining. Our Christmas Tree is still standing in the living room and has virtually lost no needles. We took everything off it, not that there was anything other than tinsel rain and candles... I so look forward to letters from you darling and am very happy when they arrive... I’ll finish for now.
8/21 Feb. Continuing the letter. I am sending you a picture and I hope it won’t get taken away. M[aria] took it from the roof of the greenhouse where we often sit. Our ice-hill isn’t very big, is it? This is the house where the guards live, and on the left, storehouses and shops. O[lga] is standing on the ice-hill. Not much to see. The wood is what Papa and we have chopped up for using in the bath and in general. Now we don’t do anything in particular in our “big yard” or in the fenced-off area. Today we had fun sliding down the hill. Afterwards, we were just wandering around as there isn’t much to do and it is so boring. Well, we go for walks and so forth. We continue to sit in the window sills, which is very pleasant. Maybe one of these days we will be able to sit on the balcony, even if not soon. It is a delightful evening just now... 7 degrees of frost. I don’t think there is anything else to write, though I would have told you much. Perhaps God will grant it some time… Big, warm greetings to your brothers... Well, sweet Katya, I will finish this letter. I wish you all the best. I am looking forward to news from you. I suppose the post isn’t working well out your way, and that is why I don’t get your letters. Kissing you very firmly. Love you. A"
