WINTER PALACE & PALACE SQUARE: Time travel to 20 July, 1914 - Nicholas II declares war on Germany
Today IN THE STEPS OF THE ROMANOVS visits the Winter Palace and Palace Square in St Petersburg. We will travel back in time to 20th July, 1914 - the day the Tsar of All the Russias pronounced the war declaration on Germany, which set off a series of events which forever changed the lives of his family, his subjects and the entire world.
This is how Grand Duchess Tatiana described this day in her diary:
"[Went] to the Winter Pal.[ace]. There [we walked] across the street on foot. Masses of people on their knees cheering and blessing Papa and Mama...There was a moleben , Batiushka was there in the middle and read Papa’s declaration of war manifesto. Then Papa said a few kind words to them, and they yelled terribly [loud]. It was wonderful. ... [I] was so happy, then Papa and Mama bowed to the people on the balcony on the square. Thousands and thousands of [people] standing [there]. Then back again walking among the huge crowd. On the one side were the simple people, on the other officers... [Our] spirits [were] lifted greatly."
