DID YOU KNOW that the captive Romanov family had a little farm in Tobolsk, complete with farm animals – including a turkey.  Alexandra, who was an animal lover and vegetarian, was against eating the animals, but after she had gone to Ekaterinburg, the turkey was cooked and eaten for Easter... We know this from the letter exchange below.

Tatiana, 18 September, 1917:

"We now have a whole farm here. Lots of chickens, turkey, ducks and five pigs, a cat, [all] live in the former governor's stables... Alexei feeds all the animals every day. He and Papa built a small duck pond, where they swim happily."

Olga, 28th April, 1918:

“Yesterday, we ate the ‘poor’ turkey. Mama, you would have said ‘one should not’, dear little soul…”

Maria, 15 May, 1918 (from Ekaterinburg to Tobolsk:

“Mama, speaking about the turkey, said ‘you should not have…'”
