According to a peer-reviewed scientific report published in the journal “Nature,” the Thwaites Glacier is melting faster than expected. It is a known fact that the Thwaites Glacier is a rapidly changing ice-ocean system located in Antarctica. Quite recently, a team of researchers shared some disturbing observations based on borehole experiments and concluded that the rate and extent of ice loss in the doomsday glacier seem unprecedented. The explorers experimenting in Antarctica drilled an access hole through 587 meters of ice and inserted a borehole-deployable conductivity, temperature, and depth or “CTD” profiler to sample the hydrographic structure of the extremely deep water column. The scientists then conducted multiple experiments and recorded a series of observations. While analyzing the data, they also discovered that the grounding zone of the Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf or “TEIS” is characterized by a warm and highly stable water column. According to the research team, the canonical three-equation model for ice-shelf basal melting widely used to generate sea-level projections, is not appropriate for the Thwaites Glacier. Moreover, the magnitude of velocity, heat, and salt mixing in the ice shelf–ocean boundary layer is challenging to measure and adds enormous uncertainty when modelling the future behavior of the Antarctic ice sheet. Long story short, the Thwaites Glacier, which drains about 10% of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, continues to melt in a slightly unpredictable manner. This, according to experts, is extremely concerning. Published as a research report in “Nature” on February 15, 2023.
