In the year 2009, a group of dedicated scientists set out on a mission to study how marine planktons or “marine wanderers” such as bacteria, algae, and jellyfish processed carbon dioxide. The “Tara Oceans Expedition” was an extremely ambitious 4-year-long project. It started in 2009 and ended in 2013. Quite surprisingly, the entire mission was primarily funded by a famous fashion designer from France. Scientists from the Tara Oceans Expedition were successful in collecting more than 35,000 planktonic samples from all of the major oceanic regions. The captured viruses, microbes, and microscopic eukaryotes, or organisms such as algae and jellyfish, were subsequently studied using ultra-modern sequencing techniques.

On April 19, 2023, a paper published in the reputed journal “Nature” shared genomic insights on “mirusviruses.” The word “mirus” means “strange” in Latin. The published data showed that these mysterious marine viruses were infecting oceanic planktons from sunlit oceans. The scientists made one more mind-boggling discovery. They were able to link mirusviruses with herpesviruses and giant viruses. The scientists reached this conclusion when they saw striking similarities between the genes that coded for the protective viral shells of all of these viruses. In other words, the study authors concluded that mirusviruses are mysterious hybrids of herpesviruses and giant viruses.

This study is indeed remarkable because it sheds light on the oceanic origin of herpesviruses. Scientists have identified more than 100 herpesviruses so far and out of these 100+ herpesviruses, 8 regularly infect humans. But why do herpesviruses have an oceanic origin? Well, that question will most likely be answered in the next few years. Make sure you keep checking this space for epic research updates from across oceans.
