The Largest Carrier-to-Carrier Battle In History...

A Historic Battle Between The Navies Of The United States And Japan Took Place In The Vicinity Of The Philipine Sea, During World War 2. This Was Called The Battle Of The Philipine Sea, And Occurred Near The Mariana Islands From 19 To 20th June, 1944. The Battle Featured The United States Fifth Fleet And The 1st Mobile Fleet Of The Imperial Japanese Navy. The Battle Primarily Involved Carrier-based Aircrafts From Both Sides. It Was The Largest Carrier-to-carrier Battle In History, Involving 24 Aircraft Carriers And Approximately 1,650 Carrier-based Aircrafts.
The United States Fought With 15 Aircraft Carriers And 900 Fighter Aircrafts, While The Japanese Navy Had 9 Aircraft Carriers And Roughly 750 Fighter Aircrafts.

The Main Motive Of The Battle Was To Capture The Northern Mariana Island Group, Which Was Under Japanese Administration Since World War 1. At The End Of The Battle The Japanese Lost Three Aircraft Carriers And Roughly 600 Aircrafts, While The U.s. Navy Lost Some 123 Fighter Aircrafts, But Did Not Lose Any Carriers. The United States Navy Won Because It Had A Numerical Advantage With More Carriers And Aircraft, As Well As Superior Training And Tactics. The Battle Of The Philippine Sea Secured The Mariana Islands For The United States And Provided A Base For Further Air Attacks On Japanese Mainland . The Loss Of So Many Aircraft Carriers And Aircraft At The Battle Of The Philippine Sea Severely Crippled Japan's Naval Aviation Capabilities, And Japan Was Unable To Recover From It. The Battle Effectively Ended Japan's Ability To Conduct Large-scale Carrier Operations, And Eventually Led To Its Defeat In World War 2.
