The South China Sea, A Marginal Sea Of The Pacific Ocean, Situated in east and south east asia. Covering Approximately 3.6 Million Square Kilometers in total surface area , South china sea is one of the largest Marginal Sea's in the world. The sea lies South Of Chinese mainland And Northwest Of The Philippines. in the south, it is bounded by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

It Is Connected with The East China Sea By The Taiwan Strait, and With The Philippine Sea By The Luzon Strait. The Palawan group of islands separate it from the sulu sea. The Gulf Of Thailand borders the Western Portion Of The South China Sea, while the java sea lies in the south.

The Geographic Location Of The South China Sea makes it Strategically Important. It Links The Indian Ocean To The Pacific Ocean And Is Actually One Of The Busiest Waterways In The Whole World. Nearly One Third Of The World's Maritime Shipping Passes Through It, Carrying Over $5 Trillion Worth Of Trade Each Year.

South China Sea Has Vast Quantities Of Natural Resources. Huge Amounts Of Oil And Natural Gas Reserves Are Believed To Lie Beneath Its Seabed. It Is Estimated That Nearly 11 Billion Barrels Of Oil And 190 Trillion Cubic Feet Of Natural Gas Lies Within The South China Sea. This Natural Resources are One Of The Main Reason Why Nearly All The Countries Situated Around The Sea, Has Terrestrial Disputes With Each Other. As Exclusive Economic Zone Of A Country Can Extend For Nearly 370 Kilometres From The Coastline, Each Country In The South China Sea Wants To Claim Major Parts Of The Sea. China And Taiwan Both Claim Nearly Half Of The Sea, While Vietnam, The Philippines, Malaysia And Brunei Each Have Overlapping Claims To Parts Of It.

There Are More Than 250 Small Islands Within The South China Sea, And Several Countries Lay Claim On Each Of These Islands. As South China Sea Is A Major Sea Route, Each Country Wants To Control The Trade Routes, Which Again Is The Reason Of Land Disputes In The Sea.
