A few years ago, Nintendo did something free ever saw coming, they re-released the original NES, Super Nintendo, Famicom, and Super Famicom under their Classics series of systems. These Mini consoles were nothing more than emulation boxes, shaped to look like scaled down versions of the original systems. Each system came pre-loaded with a variety of different classic games for their respective markets, but for some reason after the 16-bit era the Nintendo Classics systems just... Stopped being a thing. They were wildly popular so you have to wonder why this was the case. Well I have a theory, and it goes directly back to Nintendo themselves choosing a more profitable solution for them: The Nintendo Switch Online Service.
While many look back at the NES Classic and Super NES Classic fondly, they really had some issues with how they played games. Each had pretty significant amounts of lag and latency, most noticable in like Punch Out. For some games you could adapt, but for many others it made playing games a challenge. The problem is there was no way to fix them once they were shipped, and you couldn't add additional games.
With the Nintendo Switch, however, that had an established install base they could already tap into, but they changed things from the Wii & Wii U. Instead of a Virtual Console setup that you could buy a title once and own it, the Switch Online service requires a subscription, meaning Nintendo continues to get revenue each and every month for you to have access to these titles. A shrewed move, but it's paid dividends for Nintendo.
I personally would still love to see an N64 Classic, and even a GameCube Classic, but alas those days are long gone and I didn't think we're what going to see them.
Would you want an N64 Classic? What games would you want on it? Let me know in the comments.
