Let's talk about the importance of doing range of motion exercises in conjunction with stem cell therapy to regenerate degenerative arthritic joints.

Let me explain what happens to the surrounding muscles and tendons of a joint when it is inflamed or in pain. All sensory perceptions, such as pain, temperature, light touch, deep touch, prick, itchiness are not perceived in the body part. They are perceived in a map of the body part in the opposite side of the brain, known as the parietal lobe. Sensory nerves from the joint carry the pain signals to the spinal cord and up to the parietal lobe where it is perceived.

In the case of pain, these nerves carry the pain signal, not only to the parietal lobe in the brain, but also to an area of the brain that is known as the fight-or-flight center. It is technically called the mesencephalon or mid brain. This is a very primitive part of our brain. Pain is not pain until it hits the brain. Now think about it. If we have pain, the brain has to decide to either attack the source of the pain, i.e., fight or run away from it, i.e., flight. When this area of the brain senses pain, it will send signals down to the painful joint and tell the muscles and tendons of that joint to tighten up or act as a splint to prevent that joint from moving. Think of what happens when you touch something hot. You quickly withdraw your hand without thinking about it. That's this area of the brain at work.

So this is a protective reflex to avoid more pain. Now, this reflex may be good, but there's a downside to this splinting action of the muscles and tendons.

Over time, the motion and strength of the joint will continue to decrease. Just like what happens when you put a cast on a broken arm there's no movement in the muscles atrophy. Joints depend upon movement for blood flow to carry nutrients into the joint. No nutrients equals death to the tissues of that joint and degeneration.

Stem cells will regenerate or regrow new joint tissue like cartilage. But what they won't do is get your range of motion back. You have to do this via the prescribed exercises, so if you want your stem cells to last a long time, do your range of motion exercises, whether you are in pain or not.
