"Cam morphology, a distinct bony morphology of the hip, is prevalent in many athletes, and a risk factor for hip-related pain and osteoarthritis. Secondary cam morphology, due to existing or previous hip disease (eg, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease), is well-described. Cam morphology not clearly associated with a disease is a challenging concept for clinicians, scientists and patients."

❇️Cam FAI has an increased prevalence in the athletic population, where repetitive impact and increased stress on the physis may cause the development of abnormal joint morphology. From a young age, the frequency and intensity of training in this population are far greater than in recreational athletes or the general population.

Cam morphology (greater alpha angle) was associated with the presence, location and severity of MRIdefined cartilage defects and labral tears in young adult football players
► The relationship between cam morphology size and MRI-defined cartilage defects and labral tears (presence, location and severity) was no greater in young adult football players with hip and/or groin pain (including a positive FADIR test) than in those without pain
