Personally, when I see someone post something and it says “Sound on!!”, I’m like “I’LL decide whether I want the sound on, thank you very much.”
But if you’re a motion designer not utilising sound design in any way, then you animation isn’t going to be as effective as it can be.
And also, if you plan your animation in a certain way, you can lean on sound design and save keyframing time.
In this video, I look at using sound design instead of animating.

I had the pleasure of connecting with a fantastic sound designer, Kam Williams. Check out his work and get in touch with him here:

He sent him the animation I show in this video, and he very kindly outlined his process for me.
“After reviewing Adam’s original footage, I immediately recognized that his audio style was moving in a promising direction. He aimed to evoke a Connect 4-like feel, which struck me as a brilliant concept. However, Connect 4 involves pieces moving more vertically than horizontally. This led me to think of an abacus, a mathematical tool featuring a two-dimensional array of sliding beads. Thus, I decided to source recordings of abacus and bead samples. Additionally, given the concrete surface in the video, I included recordings of pushed concrete.
What set my approach apart was using the same samples but editing and trimming them to simulate sliding on a consistent surface, rather than varying textures. By carefully applying panning and audio placement, I achieved a sensation akin to abacus beads moving across concrete.
I then replaced the original notification ping with a brighter sound and added a simple jingle to signify project success. For this, I utilized FL Studio’s Phono Collider plugin, adjusting parameters to achieve the desired timbre.
Finally, I blended the original video’s audio with ambient recordings from a small Australian town. While the original video provided the necessary ambiance, I needed to ensure that the animation's sound did not overpower. Initially considering applying a gate to cut off the animation sound and use it as an underlying layer, I opted instead to smoothly fade it out. Layering these sounds added depth and richness to the overall audio landscape.”
