“Happy Lunar New Year!
I’ve been thinking about the deterioration in human rights, the upending of democracy, the massive changes we’ve seen not just to the rule of law but to life generally in the once great city in Hong Kong, but also thinking about the mainland and thinking about people like Zhang Zhan, the young woman who went to find out what were the origins of COVID-19, and as a result was thrown in jail by the Chinese Communist Party, and is still languishing in prison for simply trying to establish the truth.
I’m thinking about Jimmy Lai, that brave Hong Konger, who, for opening a newspaper that championed human rights, championed democracy, promoted the rule of law, is himself now arraigned before the Hong Kong courts.
So it is time to wish people a happy Lunar New Year but also to reflect on those who won’t enjoy the celebrations and the privileges and the freedoms that we embrace and enjoy.”

我一直思慮人權惡化、民主顛覆、我們目睹的巨變，香港這座曾經偉大的城市在法治和普遍生活方面均遭逢巨變。
我也想起中國大陸，想起像張展這樣的人。那年輕女子走去報導COVID疫情，結果被中國共產黨判處入獄，至今仍在受牢獄之苦──純粹為了尋求真相。
我想起黎智英，那勇敢的香港人因創辦一份捍衛人權、捍衛民主、推廣法治的報紙，而令自己被帶上法庭受審。
現在是時候拜年迎新歲，也是時候思念無法慶祝、無法享受特權和自由的人，而那是我們擁抱和享受的東西。」
