On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, a Mogadishu court found 36 foreigners guilty of illegal fishing in Somali territorial waters. The 33 Iranian and 3 Pakistani nationals were apprehended by the Somali coast guard near the coastal town of Hobyo on April 10 for fishing without permits. Each individual was fined $11,000, the group was also fined an additional $30,000 for illegally catching and transporting fish to Oman in November, and their two boats, equipment, and the 24,850 tons of fish they caught while fishing in Somali waters were seized. For years, foreigners have illegally fished in Somali waters, depleting fish stocks, thereby infringing upon the livelihoods of the local fishing community. With the longest coastline in Africa, and millions of tons of migratory fish species frequenting its territorial waters annually, Somalia has the potential to possess one of Africa’s largest fishing industries. According to Radio Dalsan, Somalia has recently established a maritime security force composed of the Somali coast guard, navy, and international partners to patrol its territorial waters.
