Almost 1,000 members of the terrorist group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have been killed by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo since the state of siege was implemented in North Kivu and Ituri provinces in May 2021. In 2018, the number of ADF insurgents was estimated to be only 500. On Saturday, June 10, 2023, spokesman for the Operation Sokola 1 Grand Nord Captain Antony Mualushayi stated, “During the state of siege, we carried out operations here and there in the Beni region against armed groups, in particular the ADF and their allies. The bodies of the ADF have been transported to an unknown destination by its troops. This assessment was carried out in 7 areas of Beni. 702 ADF collaborators were arrested by the army. Among them, there are heads of villages and neighborhoods. Also, the army arrested many ADF leaders, including Jordanians, Pakistanis, Kenyans, and Afghans,” as reported by 7 Sur 7. According to The Washington Post, The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) believes the ADF has links to international Islamist terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda, al-Shabaab, Hezbollah, al-Qaeda in the Maghreb, Boko Haram, and the Taliban. According to Reuters, Islamic State financier Waleed Ahmed Zein is believed to have bankrolled the ADF at least once. The ADF originated in Uganda but has spread across the border to the DRC. The ADF conducted the twin terrorist attacks in Kampala, Uganda in November 2021, for which the Islamic State claimed responsibility.
