Meet the researchers shaping the world
Meet the researchers exploring Japan’s climate change response so far and what can be done for a just and equitable transition.
What does the concept of a just and fair transition mean to the people of Japan? Despite being one of the highest-emitting countries globally and setting itself challenging climate change targets, Japan finds itself on a slow march towards becoming a truly sustainable and zero-carbon society. Any change from the current fossil fuel regime to renewable or low carbon technologies will mean a shift in society that will impact people across Japan unevenly, particularly those living in rural areas. The Japanese government aims to become carbon neutral by 2050 but what are the societal and policy implications of this?
Researchers from Japan and the UK examine what a just response to climate change looks like in Japan via a geographical lens. The insights from the project will be shared with practitioners and policymakers to help shape policies for a just and inclusive transition.
