Kosovo - Kosovo's new president Hashim Thaci sworn in / Kosovo president's inauguration interrupted
(8 Apr 2016) Kosovo's new President, Hashim Thaci, on April 7th 2016 assumed his post in a swearing-in ceremony at the country's parliament.
The ceremony was boycotted by the country's opposition.
Thaci, 47, who replaces Atifete Jahjaga, was elected in parliament on February 26th in the absence of nearly all opposition lawmakers who earlier tried to disrupt the voting with tear gas.
Earlier in the week, the Constitutional Court turned down an opposition request to void Thaci's election, saying it had found no evidence of irregularities.
Posters against his election were put up by the opposition in many cities.
A lawmaker from the opposition Self-Determination party, Ylli Hoxha, called Thaci an "illegal President" and said his party would not recognise him.
The opposition has been disrupting the chamber since September 2015 to protest a deal between Kosovo and Serbia that gives more powers to ethnic Serbs in Kosovo and another on a border demarcation pact with Montenegro.

Opposition supporters threw gas canisters to try to disrupt the inauguration ceremony for the new president, Hashim Thaci on April 8th.
The canisters were released before the start of the ceremony at Pristina's main Skanderbeg Square.
The opposition supporters who threw the canisters were scattered in small groups surrounding the chairs for the guests, before all of the guests arrived.
An Associated Press television crew saw five or six supporters being detained by the police while the others were pushed away.
The main opposition Self-Determination Movement Party claimed responsibility for the incident, broadcasting a short video of the action on its Facebook social media site.
The ceremony went ahead without any disruption.
