"In the course of the proceedings, Mr Barghouti and his lawyers made a number of comments which were primarily political comments. These, of course, are a terrible insult to the families of the victims. This is first and foremost a criminal trial. It's a trial about justice for the families, for the 26 people who were killed as a result of the acts in the indictments, including an eight-month-old baby, including a pregnant woman, including a great-grandmother. But it's also a betrayal of all those Palestinians who are trying to resolve this conflict by peaceful means."

STORYLINE:
Prominent Palestinian uprising leader Marwan Barghouti distributed his own "indictment" of Israel during his murder trial in an Israeli court on Thursday, as scuffles erupted between Palestinians and families of Israeli victims.
Barghouti was led out of the Tel Aviv courtroom several times because he kept interrupting proceedings.
Tensions ran high between Palestinian and Israeli spectators, with both camps pushing and shoving each other outside the court.
Israel accuses Barghouti, the leader of Arafat's Fatah movement in the West Bank, of helping plan and finance attacks that killed 26 Israelis.
As the head of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah party in the West Bank, Barghouti is charged with organising attacks whose victims include and 8-month-old baby and a 79 year old grandmother. He denies he was personally involved.
Barghouti, a member of the Palestinian assembly, claims the court has no jurisdiction and insists that he is a politician, not involved in violence.
On Thursday, his lawyers distributed a 54-count "indictment" of Israel, accusing the Jewish state of committing war crimes during its 35-year occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.
It accused Israel of violating about 30 international treaties, including torture, the destruction of property, forcing Palestinians from their homes, and denying them education, healthcare and access to water.
