STORYLINE:
The Commander of UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon) General Alain Pellegrini said on Thursday that the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel was "very fragile".
"We have to be very vigilant, because at any provocation, at any even misunderstanding the situation can escalate very rapidly, " Pellegrini told AP Television.
French troops arrived at the port of Naqoura in southern Lebanon on Friday to make up part of the expanded UNIFIL presence in the area.
The latest French troops to arrive in Lebanon could be seen in ships docking at the port and unloading military construction vehicles.
Pellegrini, who is French, said that 160 French troops from the Engineers company had arrived to start infrastructure repair, de-mining and strategic support work.
Late on Thursday, French President Jacques Chirac pledged to deploy more troops to southern Lebanon, meaning that a total of 2-thousand French troops will be deployed.
Chirac had initially offered just 200 more troops, in addition to the 200 French peacekeepers already part of the force, far short of the United Nations' expectations.
Italy pledged to provide up to 3-thousand soldiers to UNIFIL on Friday, the largest contingent so far.
Also on Friday, Belgium, which earlier hesitated on making a commitment - became the latest nation to promise troops.
Other nations considering contributions include Spain, Denmark, Germany and Greece.
