Barghouti makes closing argument in murder trial

"Well, Mr Barghouti gave his personal history of the last decade and in particular of the last three years. It was a very selective history, absent from that history was any mention of Palestinian violence what-so-ever, any mention of the series crimes that he is personally charged with which resulted in the death of 26 civilians and injury to 100 or more, any reference, for example, to the terrorist attack this last weekend in which a seven-month old baby was killed. And the tragedy, of course, is all the many things that Marwan is complaining about - whether it's closures, or the security fence, or road blocks, or many others that are causing such hardship to the Palestinian people - it's these crimes that Marwan Barghouti didn't see fit to mention that are really the reason that those are in place at the moment, and are unfortunately going to have to continue."

"No decision was given, but what happened was that Marwan had the opportunity to (give a) summary (of) his political opinion about the occupation, the crimes of the occupation. Marwan stated (in) his speech that he is not considering (recognising) the competency of this court, he is not ready to relate to any legal procedure that took place in this court. Instead chose to speak about himself as a Palestinian who has lived for decade under occupation. All the sufferings he had passed (suffered), he and his family and his people. And he said that, he emphasised that the struggle against occupation is a legitimate thing given to any nation under occupation in history. He said that if the occupation will continue the Palestinian people will keep on struggling against the occupation. The Israelis should understand peace is the shortest, the safest and the most powerful way to have calm and security, but peace cannot co-exist with occupation therefore if the Israelis want their safety, their security they have to give it also to the Palestinians by giving them their legitimate rights having their independent state side by side with Israel. Thank you."

STORYLINE:
A prominent Palestinian leader gave his closing argument at his trial on 26 murder counts on Monday, calling the accusations against him bogus.
Israel has charged Marwan Barghouti, one of the Palestinians' most popular figures, of having a role in attacks against Israelis.
Until his arrest 16 months ago, he was the leader of Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement in the West Bank.
His attorney, Jawad Boulus, says he tops Lebanon-based Hezbollah's list of prisoners it wants freed in a prisoner exchange with Israel.
Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon said last week that a swap of prisoners with Hezbollah guerrillas is closer than ever but requires approval from Israel's Cabinet.
However, he said in a newspaper interview that Israel will not release Barghouti in the emerging deal.
After Barghouti's closing argument on Monday, Boulus told the media the Palestinian uprising leader chose to focus on the suffering of Palestinian people - including himself - under Israeli occupation.
Barghouti was arrested during Israel's military offensive in the West Bank in April.
